The Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659) severed Catalonia from a part of its territory creating the French-Spanish border.
The geographic and cultural boundary of
the country to the north was and still is
the line of the Corbieres hills.
The Pyrenees never constitued a natural border but -on the contrary- a refuge and
a dynamic area for economic activities.
The Spanish side of the country
stretches from the Pyrenees to
Delta de l'Ebre. Andorra and the
Balear Islands do not belong to Catalonia
but share the same language and culture.
